My House Caught on Fire

By Chandler - 11/06/2013

So I don't know if you've noticed but I've been MIA for a little while now... a week? longer? I honestly can't keep track of the days anymore. But I actually have a good reason for my long-term/short-term/I-seriously-don't-know-term absence.  My house caught on fire.  But actually.  Friday afternoon (almost a week ago now), my apartment at school caught on fire from the dryer. It was the scariest, most horrific, most traumatic experience I have ever had to deal with. THE END. I cried for days, I still cry when I think about it for too long. Everyone is safe and no one was injured; I am counting my blessings! We lost clothes and personal belongings.

Nothing makes you realize what is truly important like a tragedy.
You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.
Things can be replaced and people cannot.
These are all phrases that I've been hearing since it happened.  And yes they are true but right now I don't want to hear them. I want to be sad and I want to cry. My stuff is gone.  Some of my favorite clothes, shoes, jackets... gone. I know that it is selfish and stupid but I love my shoes.  And my leather jacket--it was really cute.  But all of these things can be replaced.  And someday I'll be happy and loving my new stuff.  Right now is not that time.
Everyone has been super helpful and understanding.  And I could not appreciate my friends, family, community, classmates, and professors more! Everyone wants to help and do what they can to make sure that we are safe and comfortable.  I have a roof over my head and food in my stomach.  I have clothes to wear, even if they aren't mine. I am still so much luckier than many people out there in the world.  It's just sad and I need time to grieve.

A word from the wise: Clean out the dryer vent hose in the back of your dryer! Go do it now!

I'll be back tomorrow with some more wise words from my friend the fire chief on how to prevent house fires!

  2. oh man! glad you're okay! but i do agree, losing clothes/shoes is hard, they become identifiers of you, especially if you worked and saved to buy them. go right ahead and grieve it, it's disappointing, but at least everyone is okay!
